To become a childminder and look after children – from birth to school age – in your own home, you’ll need to register with Ofsted or a childminding agency.

Childminder assistants
Childminders can take on more children by employing an assistant. Assistants can only be left alone with children for up to two hours and they must hold a Paediatric First Aid Certificate.
Childcare on domestic premises
If four or more people come together to provide childcare in a home, it’s classified as childcare on domestic premises and slightly different regulations apply.
